01 · The day, hour by hour

The day, hour by hour

Snow, wind and ice decide the route. The guide checks conditions the same morning and will change the plan rather than take a risk.

  1. 08:45

    Meet, gear and briefing

We fit thermal suits, boots, helmets and goggles, then go through the route, hand signals and the day’s ice report.

  2. 09:15

    Driving practice on the ice

A short session on flat sea ice so everyone is comfortable with the snowmobile before we head out in single file.

  3. 10:00

    Out across the frozen fjord

We ride between pressure ridges and icebergs locked in the ice, with stops for photos and stories about winter life in Ilulissat.

  4. 11:30

    Break at a hunter’s cabin

A warm stop out of the wind, with coffee and the chance to try ice fishing through a sealed hole if conditions allow.

  5. 12:30

    Lunch in a heated tent

Hot soup, bread and something warm to drink, sitting on reindeer skins while the dogs are harnessed outside.

  6. 13:30

    Dog sled home

You swap the engine for a dog team and ride the last stretch back towards town with a local musher.

  7. 15:00

    Back at the harbour

We hand back the gear, warm up and answer the questions that always come after a first day on the ice.

02 · Safety on the ice

Safety on the ice

The sea ice is a road that changes every day. We ride slowly, in single file, and only where the ice has been checked that morning.

  • A valid driver’s licence is required to drive a snowmobile. Passengers do not need one.
  • We keep to the guide’s track and the marked route. Leaving it is not allowed.
  • Helmets are worn at all times while the snowmobile is moving.
  • No alcohol before or during the tour. Guests who have been drinking cannot join.
  • Tell us about back, neck or pregnancy concerns before booking. The ride is bumpy.
  • The route or the tour may be cancelled if ice, wind or visibility makes it unsafe.

Cancellation and changes

Winter tours are paid in full at booking. If we cancel because of ice, weather or safety, you choose between a free rebooking and a full refund.

  • Cancelled by us for ice, weather or safety: free rebooking or full refund.
  • Plans changed? Contact us as early as you can and we will try to move your date.

03 · FAQ

Questions before you book

Do I need experience to drive a snowmobile?

No. We start with practice on flat sea ice and the guide stays close the whole day. You do need a valid driver’s licence.

Can two people share one snowmobile?

Yes, and most guests do. You can swap driver along the route, and the price covers the machine rather than the person.

What if I only want the dog sled part?

This expedition is built as one day with both. If you prefer dogs only, book the two hour Classic Sled Adventure instead.

How cold will it be?

Between minus 10 and minus 25 °C is normal, and the wind on the ice makes it feel colder. The thermal suit we lend you is made for this.

Is the dog sled ride suitable for children?

Children can ride as passengers on the sled with an adult. Snowmobile driving is for guests aged 18 and over with a licence.

What happens if the sea ice is not safe?

We cancel or move the tour to land and a shorter sled route. You will hear from us the day before or the same morning.

Can I take photos during the ride?

Yes, but stop the snowmobile first. We build in several photo stops, including at the pressure ridges and the cabin.
